Beat that heat – the natural way!

To all the lovelies who have been following the blog and Wildflower Naturals products passionately, I would like to thank you for your love and encouragement.

I have been away travelling, researching and putting together a more stable platform for the natural, organic and hand made stuff we create with love. There is a little surprise for all of you there, but more on that later. J

Summers are here! The dog days of summer will soon witness all of us slathering chemical laden sunscreen on our bodies. Today I want to talk about sun protection, bust some popular myths, explain SPF (sun protection factor) and share an absolutely yummy recipe of a natural sunscreen that can be made at home.

For starters, sun exposure is not just important but indispensible for a happy dose Vitamin D. Sun is the only natural source of vitamin D, the absence of which can cause havoc in our bodies. Weak bones, body aches, problems during pregnancy including pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, premature labor can all be linked to a deficiency of this important vitamin.

But an excess of sun exposure and UVA / UVB rays to be precise can cause dark spots, accelerated aging and dehydrated bodies.

Most sunscreens available in the market contain toxic ingredients or endocrine disrupting chemicals that in many cases may actually promote skin cancer growth and free radical production in the body. Not to mention that many of them use omega-6 rich oils such as soy and sunflower/safflower, which may disturb the healthy balance of fats most likely to resist oxidation. In addition, many commercial products may have been tested on animals.

Many natural oils and butters available in nature have a natural SPF. It is a great idea to switch to a natural sunscreen which uses these wonderful ingredients. SPF (20-40) – sun protecting factor refers to the theoretical amount of time you can stay in the sun without getting sunburned. For example, an SPF of 15 would allow you to stay in the sun 15 times longer than you could without protection.

This recipe uses natural, nourishing ingredients that will together give you a protection of SPF 30 – 40.

What you need -

  • 1 tbsp of Coconut Oil (SPF 4-6)
  • 1 tsp of Shea Butter  (SPF 4-6)
  • 5 drops of Carrot Seed Oil (SPF 35-40)
  • 1 tsp of non – nano Zinc Oxide (SPF 2-20, depending on quantity)
  • 30 drops of jojoba oil
  • 30 drops of vitamin E
  • 8 drops of lavender essential oil (soothes and protects the skin)
  • 5 drops of eucalyptus oil (anti-bacterial properties)
  • 3 drops of peppermint oil (helps soothe irritated skin)

Recipe –

Melt the oils and the butter in a double boiler on low flame. Once in liquid form, take it off the flame. Add essential oils. Whisk a little and add non-nano zinc oxide. Whisk again and store in an airtight container. Shelf life is 4 - 6 months. Store in a cool and dry place.

Note 1 – The same lotion can be made waterproof by adding beeswax.

Note 2 - Zinc oxide is a natural mineral which provides the safest and most effective protection against UV rays. Unlike chemical sunscreens, zinc forms a physical barrier on the skin, reflecting the sun's rays rather than absorbing them. Zinc Oxide is the best performing ingredient for blocking both UVA and UVB rays.

It would be lovely to have suggestions and feedback on the blog!

Till then,

Stay healthy, stay happy, stay wild!
